Jenny Holzer / YOU BE MY ALLY
UChicago worked with Jenny Holzer to develop a project that is relevant for our current times: Operating at the edge of arts and technology and responding to the challenges of participation during a pandemic, this new commission, YOU BE MY ALLY offers a critical perspective on the aims of education and the impact of public speech in a democracy in the lead-up to the 2020 election.
We have developed a project with an artist that distinguishes the arts at UChicago and is grounded in texts that come from our students and the College’s general education curriculum – the Core curriculum. Holzer’s medium has always been text, in this case quotations sourced by current students and faculty from the Core, a distinct curriculum of the College that reflects the University’s commitment to open discourse and critical inquiry. This project gives us an opportunity to open up the Core to the public, and to highlight the role that these texts play in foundational ideas about democracy and civic participation.
